Former Wales under-20s star Callum Sheedy issued stark warning by Pat Lam after England call-up

Callum Sheedy has been sent a stark message by Bristol Bears Director of Rugby Pat Lam as he ponders his international future.

After coming through the Wales age grade set-up, the Cardiff-born and raised fly-half has been named in a young England squad to face the Barbarians this weekend.

It's an uncapped match, so it will not tie Sheedy, who qualifies to play for England, Wales and Ireland, to the Red Rose.

But, by getting him into the set-up it would seem England are at the front of the queue.

Sheedy, who has lit up the Gallagher Premiership this season, played for Wales under-20s but withdrew from a squad ahead of a game against France that would have tied him to the red jersey.

Sooner or later, it would seem inevitable that the talented youngster will have to make a decision, and Lam says it's a decision he'll have to live with 'for the rest of his life'.

Lam, who will coach the Barbarians against Sheedy and an England XV this weekend, said Sheedy didn't seek him out for advice before making the decision.

"I would expect players to talk to their parents," said Lam.

"When players do ask me about what they should do, I would guide them towards going through the people that matter and making sure they make the final call.

He warned: "Don't make it for any other reason. Make sure it's your call because you live with that decision for the rest of your life and can't blame anyone.

"That's always my answer."

Sheedy, who came through the Cardiff Blues academy, has had a stellar season for Bristol, earning their 'Back of the Year' award at the end of season dinner.

"I'm really pleased for Callum, he's had a great season," added Lam.

"He's 23 years old, he's a really good attacking player and can take the ball to the line with real composure and calmness, and he's a real leader for a young guy.

"He'll fit in nicely and Piers O'Conor. It's huge for Bristol Bears when you consider we haven't had anyone involved in an England setup for a while.

"Even though we want to win, hopefully those two play well."
