Former Wales U20s international joins three-times European champions Saracens on loan

Former Wales U20s international Ethan Lewis has joined three-times European champions Saracens on loan until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old hooker from Treorchy will provide injury cover for the Championship outfit.

Lewis has made 60 appearances for the Blues since his debut against Leicester in 2015, featuring in nine games this season.

He makes the move to StoneX Stadium ahead of Sarries’ first home league match of the season, against Jersey Reds on Saturday.

“Ethan is out of contract at the end of this season, so it’s important we give him the opportunity to put his hand up to strengthen his case for other opportunities,” said Blues director of rugby David Young.

“With a couple of boys returning from injury recently, there is a lot of competition for the number two jersey here.

“With the current situation limiting game-time for the wider squad, this opportunity presented itself and will be beneficial for all parties.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for Ethan to head to Saracens and gain valuable game-time in a competitive environment and league.

“We wish him all the best for the rest of the campaign.”

Lewis is the second Blues player to go out on loan to an English Championship club.

Fly-half Luke Scully has joined Cornish Pirates and shared in their memorable league victory over Saracens last weekend.

“Young Scully basically just needs to play,” said Young.

“With the Welsh Premiership not playing, he was really thirsty for some rugby, so that’s a great opportunity for him to go out and play.”

In further news, Cardiff's Welsh international flanker Shane Lewis-Hughes will miss the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery this week. He faces a recovery period of five to six months.
