Former Wales Grand Slam-winning coach Mike Ruddock joins Ospreys on short-term deal

The Ospreys have announced a short-term deal for former Wales Grand Slam-winning coach Mike Ruddock.

Ruddock, who's also an ex-Swansea RFC coach, is set to take a consultancy role at the Liberty Stadium for the next month, and will be there to support interim coaches Matt Sherratt and Carl Hogg.

He joins after the regional side negotiated a temporary release from previous coaching role at Lansdowne FC in Dublin.

Confirming the news on their official website, the region also stated that they are conducting a "wide-ranging review" of their rugby operations, and were "looking at the coaching set-up and defining what roles are needed in the future".

Managing director Andrew Millward added: "We are delighted to have Mike join us for a month.

"The coaches and players have all welcomed the decision to draft him in to offer his support and having him play a key role in our review of our rugby operations."

Despite Millward's claims that Ruddock's appointment is only on a temporary basis, there is already a suggestion that it could yet turn into a more long-term role.

Confirming the news via their official Twitter page, Landsdowne FC tweeted: "With regret but with our full support we announce that with immediate effect Mike Ruddock has taken a position with Ospreys to become initially a Consultant for a month but may turn into a longer commitment. Mike & Ospreys have kept us fully informed at all times.

The appointment comes on the back of a turbulent week for the region, with interim coach Sherratt recently admitting that he remains in the dark over the current situation around head coach Allen Clarke, who was relieved of his coaching duties.

The region are now embroiled in a legal battle with Clarke to negotiate his departure, although as of last week he remains an employee.
