Former Wales coach Raymond Verheijen in bitter row with England boss Phil Neville after astonishing attack on Women's World Cup

Gary Speed's former Wales number two Raymond Verheijen has caused a storm after claiming the Women's World Cup would have been better 'played behind closed curtains.'

The outspoken Dutchman, who helped regalvanise Welsh football with Speed, made his critical remarks on social media.

He has previously been at the centre of other Twitter controversy, slamming the FA of Wales' decision to appoint Chris Coleman as manager and claiming the Welsh legacy built under Speed would be ruined.

When he was manager, Speed himself had to ask Verheijen to tone down comments after he had been critical of Premier League clubs.

The most recent outburst has led to a spat with England manager Phil Neville, who hit out at Verheijen's remarks.

Verheijen said: "So far, it would have been better if the World Cup had been played behind closed curtains. The level of play is shocking. Like watching grass grow. One of the reasons is that most teams are coached by clueless left overs from the men’s game rather than by the best female coaches."

Former Manchester United star Neville said the Dutchman's tweet was "probably aimed at me".

Neville went on: "He's had a go at Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Mauricio Pochettino, Jurgen Klopp. Every top manager in the world, he's had a go at.

"He is a keyboard warrior. He sits and talks a fantastic game, but I never see him working in top-level football. That is why he can't get employed. We can all talk a good game.

"Go win a Champions League, go and win a Premier League. That's what Wenger does - the people he is having a go at.

"It's why he has an egg next to his name on Twitter."

Former Australia international Mark Schwarzer also hit back at Verheijen, saying: "Clearly you haven't watched any of the games."

Verheijen's views will not be compatible with those of his former FA of Wales employers, who are huge supporters of women's football.
