Former WA treasurer and leader of the opposition Troy Buswell is due to face court next month charged with six aggravated assault charges against a woman and one count of unlawful damage.
Mr Buswell, 53, is facing three counts of aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm and three counts of aggravated common assault.
It will be alleged the offences occurred over four years between 2015 and 2019.
Mr Buswell was charged after an investigation by the Cold Case Serious Crime Squad.
It is understood Mr Buswell and the alleged victim are known to each other.
Mr Buswell served as treasurer in the Barnett government and his political career was plagued by scandal.
He initially resigned from the ministry in 2010 over allegations of improper use of his ministerial allowances during a relationship with Greens MP Adele Carles.
However, Mr Buswell was re-appointed to cabinet later the same year and eventually regained the post of treasurer in 2012.
He quit cabinet once again in 2014 after smashing into several parked cars in Subiaco while driving home from a wedding.
Mr Buswell resigned from Parliament later that year.
He is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on the assault charges next month.
