Former Vice Finance Minister Appointed to Communist Party Role at Top Political Advisory Body

What’s new: A former vice finance minister has been named deputy secretary of the leading Communist Party group for the General Office of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China’s top political advisory body.

It was revealed that Zou Jiayi, 58, had assumed the position when she attended a meeting (link in Chinese) in this role on Friday, in which attendees discussed compiling cultural and historical materials featuring the CPPCC, according to the People’s Political Consultative Daily, a newspaper under the CPPCC.

On Thursday, the State Council, China’s cabinet, announced that Zou had been relieved from her finance ministry post (link in Chinese), which she occupied for over three years.

The background: The leading party group is responsible for tasks such as discussing and deciding major issues (link in Chinese) related to the CPPCC General Office in line with Communist Party policies, and uniting non-party cadres and the general public.

The group works under the leadership of the party group of the CPPCC National Committee and members are appointed by the Communist Party.

Zou started her career in 1988 and held several positions in finance ministry, where she worked for over two decades, including as director of the international economic relations department.

In 2017, Zou was appointed vice minister of the Ministry of Supervision. In 2018, she joined the leadership committee of the National Supervisory Commission, the top government anti-graft agency that replaced the Ministry of Supervision. Zou left the post to be a vice finance minister after three months.
