Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell dead after complications with covid

Former United States of America Secretary of State Colin Powell has died at the age of 84 after experiencing complications with coronavirus.

According to his family the politician who served under three US Presidents (George W Bush, George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan) passed away earlier today.

In a statement on his Facebook page, his family wrote: "General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19.

"He was fully vaccinated.

"We want to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment.

"We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American.

"The Powell Family."

Colin Powell died after complications with coronavirus (Reuters)

As a four-star Army general, he was chairman of the military's Joint Chiefs of Staff under President George H.W. Bush during the 1991 Gulf War in which U.S.-led forces expelled Iraqi troops from neighbouring Kuwait.

Powell, a moderate Republican and a pragmatist, later served as secretary of state under President George W. Bush.
