Former US President Barack Obama to visit Glasgow next week to attend COP26

Former US President Barack Obama is set to attend Cop26 in Glasgow next week.

The Democrat will hold a roundtable conversation at the conference with emerging leaders who are focused on climate issues around the world.

The Daily Record reports he is expected to arrive in Scotland on Monday to visit the United Nations summit on the same day.

It will be Obama's first visit to Scotland since 2017 when he delivered a speech in Edinburgh in front of business leaders and politicians and played a round of golf at the Old Course in St Andrews.

During his visit he promised to come back to enjoy the "full Scottish experience".

He said: "I promise you I will be back because, unless it is raining and blustery, I will not feel I have got the full Scottish experience."

Ahead of his appearance the ex-US leader recorded a video message where he said he was looking forward to seeing youth activists make their voices heard about the climate crisis.

He said: "From the perspective of the Obama Foundation, one of the things I’m most excited about is to see the young activists from around the world who are taking up the baton and not just working in their own countries, but now forming a collective movement across borders to tell the older generation that has gotten us into this mess that we all have an obligation to dig our way out of it.

"And if old folks won’t do it, get out of the way, because these young folks are coming and they’re ready to make sure that we have a sustainable planet and a better future for our kids and our grandkids."

Obama's arrival comes after world leaders descended on Glasgow for a two-day summit where they discussed a range of issues from deforestation to eradicating coal use.

The Obama Foundation will host the event on Monday where he will sit down with a small group from around the world to talk about various means to fight climate change.
