Former uni professor died after injuring leg on garden wall

A retired university professor died from blood loss after his leg was cut on his garden wall, a court heard.

An inquest was opened today at Avon Coroner's Court into the death of David Brian Hall.

The body of Mr Hall, who was 87, was found by a meals on wheels worker on March 15, at his home in Castle Close, Henbury.

The coroner's officer said: "The deceased was found lifeless on the floor of his dining room with a cut to his leg.

"It is believed he injured his leg on a wall in his garden."

Two paramedics attended but Mr Hall was confirmed dead at 11.54am on March 15.

The post-mortem report gave the cause of death as blood loss and skin trauma, as well as a secondary cause of ischemic heart disease.

The coroner's officer described Mr Hall as a retired university professor.

Assistant coroner, Dr Peter Harrowing, requested reports from Mr Hall's GP and from police.

Bristol University and the University of the West of England were unable to find any record of employment of Mr Hall, who was born in Wigan.

Dr Harrowing scheduled the inquest for June 4.
