Former Ulster forward Dan Tuohy takes up new role at Malone Rugby Club

Dan Tuohy has been named as the new head coach of Malone Rugby Club's newly formed Academy.

The appointment of Tuohy, who played 136 times for Ulster and was capped 11 times by Ireland, follows news that the Ulster Branch has initiated the process of setting up Academy rugby for players between the ages of 18-21 throughout the province.

It is hoped it will kick-off with league and cup competitions next season.

“The new Academy system will be a major boost to club rugby in Ulster and I want Malone to be at the forefront of making it work," Tuohy said.

“I understand how important this is to the future of Malone and I am fully committed to improving our in-house transition from minis through youth and Academy to senior rugby.

“I am looking forward to meeting the players and getting started!”

Tuohy is no stranger at Malone as his son Jaxon plays mini rugby at the club and the former Ulster star has been helping to coach the P1 side.

“Until the onset of Covid, Dan was forwards coach with Vannes in the Pro D2 in France, and he will provide a major boost to our club’s profile and youth coaching structure and we look forward to having him on board,” said club chairman Michael Kearney.

“I think this underlines what a progressive club Malone is, and I would like to assure everyone of our support and of our desire to be at the forefront of the new academy structures being put in place by Ulster Rugby.."
