Former Tottenham striker makes Timo Werner 'goalscorer' claim that will baffle Chelsea fans

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent has claimed Chelsea frontman Timo Werner is 'not a natural goalscorer'.

Werner arrived at Chelsea on a £47.6million deal from RB Leipzig having amassed a reputation as the next big thing when it comes to European strikers, scoring 34 goals in 45 outings across all competitions.

He has put together a respectable return since his move to Stamford Bridge, particularly given the fact he is playing out of position with Frank Lampard playing him out wide, the German netting eight across all competitions for the Blues so far.

But he is still coming in for criticism having failed to take some of his chances in front of goal recently.

Chelsea: 2020 in review

And former Spurs and Sunderland striker Bent has given his verdict on Werner's current situation, making a surprising claim about the type of player the Chelsea frontman is.

“I think he’s not a natural goalscorer, and you can see that from his finishing," Bent told TalkSPORT.

“But because of his movement and his pace, he’ll always get opportunities, especially with the way Chelsea play.

“He’s just got to calm down in front of goal. He looks like he’s snatching and his touch…Because he’s so worried about the finish, sometimes he’s losing track of the ball with his touch.

“He needs to get the ball under control. He needs to calm down. Relax!"

Bent added: “With Werner, we’ve seen that he can do it. If you look at his goal in the Carabao Cup against Spurs, he had a good touch out of his feet and it was a lovely finish.

“A lot of it is just confidence. When you’re scoring goals, you feel like everything you hit goes in and every game you play you’re going to score.

“But right now Werner is probably thinking, ‘urgh, where’s the next goal coming from?’

“And he’s panicking a little bit.”
