Former Tottenham starlet Elliot Thorpe set to sign for Luton Town despite Cardiff City interest as late Burnley bid emerges

Cardiff City are set to miss out on Wales youngster Elliot Thorpe, with the former Spurs midfielder set to sign with Championship rivals Luton Town.

The Bluebirds were one of several clubs to show an interest in the midfielder, who was a free agent after leaving Tottenham in the summer, while Severnside rivals Bristol City were also understood to have taken a look.

However, WalesOnline understands Luton have now won the race for his signature.

Thorpe is now set to join up with Welsh boss Nathan Jones, who was understood to be a key factor in the youngster's decision, with the Welshman left convinced that Kenilworth Road is the ideal place for him to further his development.

Luton could well complete the deal later today, and are hopeful that he will be signed in time for this weekend's clash with Bournemouth.

The Wales under-21s international was highly-rated at Tottenham, but rejected the offer of a new deal earlier in the summer in a bid to find first team opportunities, with a breakthrough in north London seemingly highly unlikely.

Leicester City and Brentford were among those to show an interest in taking him on, but it was Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim that initially appeared to win the race.

However, a row over compensation owed to Tottenham, who are understood to have disputed his status as a free agent at the time, caused the move to collapse.

Sources claim Premier League side Burnley then made a transfer bid that was knocked back by Spurs, who seemingly held out hope of the youngster signing a new contract, but he has now left the club on a free transfer and could well be about to ply his trade in the second tier.
