Former Tottenham star reveals how Giovani Lo Celso has surprised him since permanent transfer

Chris Hughton has admitted that he has been surprised by Giovani Lo Celso’s qualities for Tottenham this season.

Lo Celso joined Spurs initially on loan in the first half of the season, before his move to England from Spanish side Real Betis was made permanent in January.

The 24-year-old has been a mainstay in the middle of Spurs’ midfield under Jose Mourinho and has impressed with some standout displays.

And Hughton, speaking ahead of Spurs’ game with Leicester City, believes the Argentine has settled the quickest out of all the signings Tottenham made last summer.

“Lo Celso, out of the new players who have come in, is probably the one who has settled the quickest,” he told Sky Sports.

“I wasn’t at the beginning where his best position was. Was he a 10?

“I remember being here and watching him play in a two against Manchester City and I thought it was such a unlike Mourinho two.

“But he did well on that occasion and I think he has got a lot more qualities than what I thought, and a lot more defensive qualities as well.

“So I think he is probably the mainstay out of those three who has made progress. Sissoko I think plays and has been a regular member playing on that right hand side because Aurier is an attacking right-back.

“He gives them that bit of assurance down that side.

"Winks is the one who is that continuity player who is going to allow that flow of the game and of course be able to feed those players in areas.”
