Former Tottenham, Liverpool and Bristol City defender Steven Caulker survives Alanyaspor bus crash in Turkey that killed teammate Josef Sural

A former Bristol City loanee has survived a bus crash that killed one of his teammates.

Aytemiz Alanyaspor defender Steven Caulker was on board the minibus when it crashed outside the Turkish side's home city of Alanya on Sunday on the way back from their match against Kayserispor.

Czech international Josef Sural died in hospital following the incident. The 28-year-old striker was one of seven players rushed there but none of the others are believed to be in critical condition.

English centre-back Caulker spent the 2010/11 season on-loan at Ashton Gate from Tottenham.

The 27-year-old made 31 appearances for the Robins, scoring twice.

According to the BBC, Caulker was unharmed physically following the crash but is emotionally distraught.

Representatives for Caulker have told Mirror Sport that he is "safe, but badly shaken up" after he was treated as an outpatient in the Alanya Private Anatolian Hospital.

The ex-Tottenham and Liverpool defender had scored his side's equaliser in the fixture.

Seven players, including one-cap England defender Caulker and ex-Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse, rented the Mercedes for the journey back from Kayseri on Sunday night.

The vehicle went off the road approximately 5km from the Turkish Mediterranean city Alanya at around 2:30am local time.

Following the crash, Super Lig club Alanyaspor posted on Twitter: "We have learned with deep sorrow that Josef Sural lost his life as a result of an accident carrying seven football players from Alanyaspor."

The club's chairman has claimed that the driver fell asleep at the wheel of the private minibus, which Caulker and six teammates had rented while the rest of the squad travelled in the team bus or on their own.
