Former Tottenham director says Jose Mourinho does not fit club's culture and must adapt

Former Tottenham Hotspur director of football Damien Comolli says that Jose Mourinho does not fit the club's culture - and needs to adapt.

After a fairly solid start to life in North London, Mourinho has come in for heavy criticism in recent weeks with his side struggling for form and delivering a string of disappointing performances.

In the last few weeks, the club have bowed out of the FA Cup, losing at home to Norwich City on penalties, been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by RB Leipzig and suffered a run of three league matches without a win.

This form has led to widespread criticism of Mourinho, who has regularly highlighted Spurs' current injury concerns for the reason behind the club's drop-off in form.

However, former Spurs director of football Comolli, who spent three years in the job in North London, believes that the club and Mourinho's respective cultures do not match.

"I think, if you look at the bigger picture, it is interesting to think or to take an approach, as they have appointed a manager who doesn't seem to be a culture-fit to what the football club is about, and certainly not a culture-fit to the previous playing style, which was implemented by Mauricio Pochettino," Comolli told BBC Radio 5Live.

"So, for me, it is going to be a very interesting process to see what is going to happen. I think this season is probably not the season to say 'Jose Mourinho will succeed us, or he will adapt to Spurs, or Spurs will adapt to him'.

"But I think he should adapt to Spurs and their values.

"I think the turning point will be the transfer window next summer and how they deal with that.

"As Daniel Levy said recently, 'if there is no Champions League the money spent on transfers will be minimal'.

"The interesting thing about that is how Jose Mourinho will react to that and how they start the season. I think we should not make a quick judgement of what is happening at Tottenham at the moment.

"He is a manager that has come in and is totally different to anything they have had up until now. They need to adapt to each other, they need to adjust to each other, I mean the club and the manager."

With Spurs' form having dropped off over the past few weeks, it has highlighted the fact even further that a big summer lies ahead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

"For me, the January transfer window was another test," Comolli continued. "The big test is what are they going to do in the summer transfer window?

"Will the ambition of Jose Mourinho be aliened with the ambition of Daniel Levy, especially if there is no Champions League?

"And then further on, what is going to happen next season with the playing style? What we are seeing at the moment consists of five central defenders at the back.

"This is not Spurs."
