Former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has criticised the "worst rule in football" after Kylian Mbappe netted the winner for France against Spain.
The two teams were squaring off in Turin on Sunday evening in the UEFA Nations League final, with each having progressed past Belgium and Italy respectively.
The reigning world champions had initially gone 1-0 down with Mikel Oyarzabal having opened the scoring for Luis Enrique’s troops. However, they were quickly pegged back as Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema fired home a stunning equaliser.
Mbappe then scored the winner in the 80th minute, pictures initially showing he was offside. The goal was given though due to a faint touch from Spain defender Eric Garcia playing the Paris Saint-Germain man onside.
The strike itself has drawn plenty of criticism, with some arguing that Mbappe had earned a distinct advantage with his illegal positioning.
One of those to have offered his thoughts is ex- Spurs centre-back Jan Vertonghen.
Taking to Twitter, he wrote: "Worst rule in football! Sort it out please…"
The Belgian’s thoughts are somewhat ironic considering the advantage that he and his teammates earned in a somewhat similar incident during a meeting between Tottenham and Liverpool at Anfield in 2018.
Despite being initially offside from Dele Alli’s original pass, Harry Kane was then elected to have been onside due to a touch from Reds' defender Dejan Lovren. The striker was then hauled down by goalkeeper Loris Karius and a penalty was awarded.
In the end, Kane ended up missing the penalty so the decision itself was academic. He did have a chance to redeem himself though as Erik Lamela earned another controversial spot-kick within the closing minutes of the game - the match eventually ending 2-2.
