Former Tottenham captain makes summer transfer prediction for Mauricio Pochettino

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Jamie Redknapp believes that Mauricio Pochettino will be active in the market this summer, identifying the midfield as an area that needs improving.

Spurs became the first club in Premier League history not to buy a single player during a summer transfer window last year and were quiet again in January - with their last signing being Lucas Moura in the mid-season window in 2018.

That approach has been criticised by many, particularly in the second-half of the campaign as the Lilywhites have seen a potential Premier League title fight descend into a scrap for a top-four finish and consistency has been an issue.

A wealth of injury problems have also exposed the lack of depth within the squad but Redknapp believes this will be rectified in the summer market.

“I think they need to buy in the summer, get some strength in midfield because they’ve lost Dembele, who for me was one of the best, so they need to get someone in who can get them to that next level,” he told Sky Sports.

“It’s strength in depth that they need and it is difficult, it’s hard to find someone who just wants to be on the bench if Harry Kane doesn’t play, but since December they really have struggled.

“They haven’t picked up the points, the goals have been dropping, but they’re in the Champions League semi-final so some might argue it’s still been a brilliant season for Tottenham.

“The thing that Tottenham fans will say is ‘if we get two or three players in, what are we capable of?’ They just feel so close.”

Can Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal or Man United miss out on the Champions League if they finish fourth?
