Former Texans receiver Sammie Coates joins Chiefs

Former Houston Texans wide receiver Sammie Coates has joined the Kansas City Chiefs, signing as a free agent.

Coates was claimed off waivers last March from the Cleveland Browns, with the Texans surely hoping he could replicate his form from back in 2016 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Unfortunately, much like his one year in Ohio, Coates failed to impress.

After an underwhelming year in Houston where he was a peripheral figure, for the most part, he ended up losing his backup position to undrafted rookie Vyncint Smith, and once return specialist DeAndre Carter also began to be used on offense, D’Onta Foreman was placed on the active roster, and the Texans traded in Demaryius Thomas, Coates’ short-lived life in Houston was all but over.

The 25-year old managed just one reception for 12 yards through 12 total appearances for the Texans, with this sole catch coming in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts.
