Former Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler retires from the NFL

Former Houston Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler has retired from the NFL at the age of 28, according to Mike Klis of 9News.

A second-round pick out of Arizona State in 2012, Houston signed Osweiler away from the Denver Broncos in 2016 free agency. Texans brass gave him a four-year, $72 million contract, with $37 million guaranteed.

Osweiler donned battle red and steel blue for one season, passing for 2,975 yards, 15 touchdown and 16 interceptions on a 59% completion rate, good for a 72.2 passer rating. He started 14 games for Houston, as he lost his starting job towards the end of his lone season in Texas to Tom Savage.

The now-retired quarterback won one playoff game for the Texans, a home wildcard bout with the Oakland Raiders — who lacked Derek Carr, their starting quarterback.

After one season, Houston parted ways with Osweiler by trading him along with a 2018 second-round pick to the Cleveland Browns. It was a first of it’s kind NFL “salary dump” trade. He did not play a snap in Cleveland.

Six weeks after the departure of Osweiler, the Texans made another trade with the Browns: trading up to nab quarterback Deshaun Watson. The rest is history.
