Former taxi office set to be converted into a new shop in Beeston

A new shop opening in a former taxi office will "brighten up a little corner of Beeston" says the owner.

Phill Gaskin is converting the old Cable Cars' premises, in High Road, into a plant and homewares shop called the Little Plant Guys general store with help from a £2,500 Kickstarter campaign.

He hopes hopes to be ready to open in mid-April.

The former interior architect, 41, said: "The idea behind the store is to allow folk to have a more relaxed but more informed plant shopping experience.

"Rather than just coming in and swapping money for greenery, we hope you will go away with a little knowledge about how to care for your new plant pal and be able to come back at any time for a chat.

"It's definitely going to brighten up that little corner of Beeston."

The Little Plant Guys will be stocking plants and pots on the ground floor. Upstairs will have housewares such as candles, pots, pans, and brooms.

Another room, at the front, will have seating so customers can relax with a coffee, read a book and talk plants.

"We hope to extend our houseplant range with some outdoor guys and have a special flower day for folk to come pick up their blooms for the week," add Phill.

The Little Plant Guys started last year during lockdown, with Phill and his dog Larry making plant deliveries across Nottingham, Derby and Leicester in Rita, the van.

As well as home deliveries, he has been doing pop-ups at markets at The Garage, in Chilwell, New Basford, Keyworth and East Leake.

But outgrowing the space he has at home, he said he needs a permanent base.

"We have long dreamed of having a permanent base from which we can talk, juggle, shuffle, mingle and bop with plants, all over a simple cup of coffee with some simple homewares in the background to browse."

Phil, who previously designed restaurants for a living, said hitting 40 made him re-evaluate his life and he decided it was time for a career change.

"Plants have been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. My mum would host plant parties with her friends and my grandparents were big plant fans so I've never been too far from a monstera or two.

"For the past 20 years I have always had a garden of some kind and whether big or small, I try to cram as much greenery into them as I can.

"Then I turned 40 and did that thing where you say to yourself 'it's time for a change' and the Little Plant Guys was born. Restaurant designer in another life and moving towards a post-Covid plant pusher."
