Former Taoiseach Enda Kenny won a regatta with Bear Grylls and was awarded trophy by Prince William and Kate Middleton

Former Taoiseach Enda Kenny made a surprise appearance in a charity rowing regatta on the Isle of Wight yesterday alongside adventurer Bear Grylls.

The Mayo man was part of Grylls' winning crew on the yacht for African wildlife conservation charity Tusk.

And he was awarded a trophy by Prince William and Kate Middleton for his efforts in the King's Cup event.

The royals were skippers of their own boats in the race competing against six other teams - with each representing one of the couple's charities.

They looked the part in all the sailing gear, and could be seen getting in some last-minute training ahead of the race which started 30 minutes later than scheduled.

A photo tweeted by Kensington Palace shows Mr Kenny standing inches from the royals during the presentation.

The Palace said: "Congratulations @tusk_org and @BearGrylls, winners of The King's Cup!"

It's understood Mr Kenny became involved in the regatta because he is a supporter of the Tusk charity.

A photo of the winning crew shows the former Taoiseach looking ready for action, wearing a red jumper with his sleeves rolled up.

And he flashed a smile as he posed for photos with explorer Grylls.
