Former taoiseach Brian Cowen 'making steady recovery' says brother Barry

Former taoiseach Brian Cowen is 'making steady recovery' after his stroke, his brother Barry confirmed on Monday.

Barry Cowen was appointed as Ireland's new Minister for Agriculture over the weekend and he has previously held front bench spokesperson roles on Environment and Local Government, and Social Protection.

He revealed that Brian was “hugely proud and delighted” to hear he had been given the role.

When asked about his brother's health on RTÉ Radio One’s Morning Ireland on Moday, Barry said: “He’s making a steady recovery, thankfully”.

"He continues to make progress and he’s very much involved with me and my career,”

“He hopes to be home with the rest of us in the coming weeks and months and we look forward to that,” he said.

Brian Cowen took the role of Taoiseach in 2008 and remained in the position until 2011 when he took a step back from politics.

Last July after previously attending hospital for serious health concerns, Cowen “collapsed and he had a very bad stroke, and a bad bleed to the brain”, his wife Mary told Midlands 103.

Cowen spent five months in St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin before being moved to rehab.
