Former Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald accused of faking 'lost Dublin dog story' on Twitter

Former Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald was accused of faking a story about returning a lost dog to its owner in Dublin on Saturday.

The Fine Gael woman is currently a European election candidate for the capital.

While out canvassing in Ranelagh over the weekend, she came across a little lost pup.

Scary CCTV footage shows man apparently 'trying to break into house in the early hours of Sunday morning in Tallaght'

She took to Twitter to say “found this little guy at the Triangle in Ranelagh" along with a picture of the doggo.

Bizarrely, when she rang the number on the dog's collar, the owner turned out to be a fellow former Tánaiste, Senator Michael McDowell.

But, a woman by the name of Kelly Mackenzie commented underneath the photo to say that she had in fact found the dog, not Fitzgerald.

Northside locals warned following reports of suspicious man claiming to be from ESB trying to gain entry to a house in Donabate

She said: “No you didn’t find him,” she wrote. “I did. And you commandeered him for a photo op when I asked to borrow your colleague’s phone to call his owner.”

A spokesperson for Fitzgerald said that the election candidate did find the dog.

She said that a member of the public had left the dog in her care and asked if she could call the owner.
