A former Australian swimming coach accused of historical child abuse four decades ago has had his first court appearance pushed back due to medical issues.

John Reginald Wright was extradited to Brisbane from Western Australia on Friday night after he was arrested earlier this week.

Police allege the 78-year-old, who trained elite junior swimmers across Queensland and overseas for several decades, indecently dealt with children on nine occasions between 1980 and 1986.

It is alleged the offences occurred while he was working as a coach in several areas including suburbs in Brisbane, Yeppoon and Rockhampton.

He was due to face the Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning on nine counts of indecent dealing of a child and one count of common assault.

But the court was told that Mr Wright had been taken to hospital with chest pains.

He was remanded in custody and the matter was adjourned to Monday.
