Former Swansea City star throws backing behind Tranmere Rovers boss Micky Mellon for vacant manager's job

Former Swansea City winger Andy Robinson has backed Tranmere Rovers boss Micky Mellon for the vacant manager's job at the Liberty Stadium.

Previous boss Graham Potter was confirmed as the new manager of Brighton and Hove Albion last week following the sacking of Chris Hughton, and Mellon has since emerged as the bookies favourite to take over .

The 47-year old earned the fifth promotion of his career at the weekend as Rovers saw off Newport County in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.

And Robinson, who also enjoyed several stints at Prenton Park during his playing career, believes Mellon's impressive recent record means he deserves to be considered for the top job at SA1.

He told the BBC : "He's an infectious guy and five promotions in less than 10 seasons is a phenomenal job.

"If it's not to Swansea then Micky will surely be getting other offers."

Mellon has overtaken previous favourite Cameron Toshack in the list of favourites to take the job, and is now odds on with several bookmakers.

A host of names have also been linked with the position, including Robinson's former team-mate Alan Tate and cult striker Shefki Kuqi .

It's understood that the club are yet to formalise a shortlist of candidates, but are expected to hold interviews next week.

Chairman has already stressed that Potter's replacement must be capable of playing the 'Swansea Way', and Robinson believes Mellon fits the bill perfectly.

"He [Mellon] gets the best out of what he has to work with," Robinson continued.

"If it was to be Swansea City, the identity of the club, the Swansea way - the way we play - he wouldn't come away from that because that's his philosophy anyway.

"But he's adaptable as well, he's a good guy in football and he knows what it takes to win a football game."
