Former Swansea City goalkeeper linked with remarkable return as Derby County, Birmingham City and Ipswich keep close watch — reports

Former Swansea City goalkeeper David Cornell has been linked with a remarkable return to the Liberty Stadium.

The 27-year-old has proven himself as one of the best keepers in League One, making 38 appearances for Northampton Town this season.

However, with his contract now up, it's become apparent he'll be leaving the Cobblers - having been benched through the club's successful play-off bid recently as his intention to leave became clear.

And there are a number of Championship outfits already interested in the Welshman.

The East Anglian Daily Times report that Ipswich, Derby County, Blackburn and Birmingham City are all tracking Cornell.

And they add Swansea could also be interested in bringing Cornell back to SA1 five years after he left.

Whether Steve Cooper opts for a move for Cornell remains to be seen, with Newcastle loanee Freddie Woodman desperate to return to the Swans next year.

Waunarlwydd-born shot-stopper Cornell spent eight years at the Swans after coming through their youth system in 2007.

He enjoyed loan spells at Port Talbot, Hereford United, St Mirren and Portsmouth before leaving permanently in 2015 after being stuck behind Michel Vorm, Gerhard Tremmel and Lukasz Fabianski at different times.

After a year at Oldham Athletic, he moved to the Cobblers where he has impressed ever since.

He has been capped by Wales at U21s level and is reportedly close to a call-up to the senior side by Ryan Giggs.
