Former superintendent suing Scotland Yard in £500k racism and sexism claim

A former police officer is suing Scotland Yard in a £500,000 racism claim, alleging she was told to keep quiet after she saw a swastika at her north London station.

Superintendent Nusrit Mehtab was the most senior female ethnic minority officer in the Metropolitan Police.

She joined the force in 1988 and worked in everything from undercover operations to counter-terrorism.

After a long career, Miss Mehtab quit the force in January, complaining of a "toxic workplace" with sexism and institutional racism, the Daily Mail reports.

She claims she was told to keep quiet after a swastika was written in biro on the walls of her police station in Edmonton, north London, last February.

The former police officer, who is of Pakistani origin, believes she was forced to patrol alone because of her race.

She also claims white male colleagues refused to talk to or sit next to her.

Miss Mehtab, a practising Muslim, also says she refused to wear a uniformed skirt for religious reasons and claims she was forced to wear trousers made for a male officer.

She claims when the alleged swastika incident happened, Scotland Yard bosses told her to keep quiet and blamed builders.

Miss Mehtab said the force launched an investigation, but the culprit was never found - which made her believe the swastika was drawn by a police officer.

The former police officer is now bringing a claim against the Metropolitan Police at the Central London Employment Tribunal claiming constructive dismissal, race, sex and religious discrimination, harassment and victimisation.

She is seeking around £500,000 for lost earnings, pension and injury to feelings.

According to legal papers, her promotions were held up due to sexism and racism.

Scotland Yard is contesting the legal action brought by Miss Mehtab.
