Former Sunderland youngster Joel Asoro joins FC Groningen from Swansea City

Joel Asoro has joined Dutch outfit FC Groningen on a season-long loan deal from Swansea City.

The 20-year-old winger made the move from Sunderland to South Wales last summer for a fee in the region of £2m.

But he struggled for regular game time under Graham Potter last term, making a total of 17 appearances in all competitions for the first team, only four of which were starts.

And it has been confirmed that Asoro will spend the duration of the 2019/20 campaign on loan with FC Groningen.

Asoro was not included in the matchday squads for Swansea's games against Hull City, Derby County and Northampton Town under Steve Cooper.

He still has three years left to run on his current deal with the Swans.

The Dutch club have the option to buy Asoro on a permanent deal at the end of his loan spell.
