Former Sunderland youngster Joe Hugill pens long term contract with Manchester United

Former Sunderland academy prospect Joe Hugill has signed a new long term deal with Manchester United.

The 17-year-old joined the Red Devils from Sunderland in the summer of 2020 and has been a standout figure in Manchester United's youth set-up.

Hugill joins Charlie McNeil in signing a new long term deal with the club, while former Newcastle United goalkeeper Paul Woolston has penned a one-year deal.

The former Sunderland striker spent last week training with the first-team at their training camp in Surrey.

He also came off the bench twice as United took on Derby County and Queens Park Rangers in two pre-season friendlies.

Hugill was sold to United for a fee in the region of £300,000, and caught the eye of United boss Solsjkaer last season, scoring four goals for the Red Devils' Under-23's against rivals Liverpool.

He was also tipped to break into the first team after overshadowing Amad Diallo - who had just signed for Manchester United for a fee of £37million.

Prior to that, Hugill lead the attack as a 16-year-old and scored in a penalty shootout in the EFL Trophy as United's U21s beat Rochdale on penalties.
