Former Sunderland 'target' signs for Belgian first division side

Former Rangers defender Jon Flanagan has signed for Belgian First Division side Royal Charleroi Sporting Club.

The left-back has been a free agent since June after being deemed surplus to requirements by Steven Gerrard.

The Liverpool-born full-back was linked with a move to the Stadium of Light during the summer following his release from the Gers.

A move never materialised and he spent a brief period of pre-season on trial at Joey Barton's Fleetwood Town.

The 27-year-old has signed a short term contract with the Belgian side.

The Liverpudlian was once deemed a hot-prospect at Anfield but has never really kicked on despite making one appearance for England in a friendly against Ecuador in 2014.
