Former Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell training with non-league side Brighouse Town

Former Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell has been training with non-league side Brighouse Town this summer.

The 31-year-old was released by Hull City this summer and has been training with the Yorkshire club, who play in the eighth tier of English football, to maintain his fitness.

Born in Huddersfield, the striker will not be signing for the club, and is instead just ticking over while he searches for a new club.

Speaking of having the former Manchester United academy graduate training with them, manager Vill Powell said: "we cannot afford him.

"Fraizer asked while he finds another club if he could train with us.

"And it was a no brainer to let the squad enjoy his company until he moves on once more in his professional career."

Campbell made 72 appearances for the Black Cats between 2009 and 2013 - recovering from a serious knee injury and winning the affections of supporters.

He also earned an England cap while at the club in 2012 and was the last player to do so until Jermain Defoe's call-up in 2016.

He's been at Hull for the last two years where he netted 18 Championship goals, and put injury fears behind him by making more than 30 appearances in both seasons.

While many Sunderland fans would likely welcome Campbell back with open arms, the club have just sealed a loan deal for Marc McNulty, giving them with three first team striker options, with Benji Kimpioka also aiming to break in to the picture.
