Former Sunderland stopper David Preece temporarily takes up vacant goalkeeper coach role

Former Sunderland goalkeeper David Preece has taken temporary charge of the Black Cats goalkeepers after Lee Butlers departure.

Preece, who most recently acted as goalkeeper coach for Ostersunds in Sweden, has worked with the Black Cats’ senior goalkeepers this week after Butler departed to link up with former boss Phil Parkinson at Wrexham.

It's understood that the arrangement is a temporary one with the Wearsiders set to undertake an extensive recruitment process to identify a replacement.

The 44-year-old came through the academy on Wearside and forged a good career for himself with Darlington, Aberdeen and Barnsley.

He's since become an established figure and highly-regarded goalkeeper coach.

The role of goalkeeper coach has been vacant since last week after Butler opted to reunite with Parkinson at Wrexham, where he also reacquaints himself with former Sunderland assistant manager Steve Parkin.
