Former Sunderland owner Stewart Donald agrees takeover at former club

Former Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has agreed a takeover at his former club Eastleigh. The ex-Black Cats majority shareholder bought the club from Ellis Short in 2018, following their relegation to the third tier, selling the National League club in the process.

Donald would sell to Kyril Louis-Dreyfus in 2021 and reduce his stake at the Stadium of Light, with the relationship between himself and supporters turning sour after a dismal few seasons in League One. Earlier this year, he reduced his shares in Sunderland further, from 19 percent to nine percent - claiming he has no intention to sell more of his stake in the club in the short to medium term.

The reduction of his shares in Sunderland to below ten per cent, meant he could reinvest in his former club Eastleigh. A club statement read: "Eastleigh Football Club can today confirm that an agreement to purchase the club has been reached with Stewart Donald.

"The takeover is subject to ratification from the National League, EFL, and DCMS along with the appropriate owners and director’s test approval. Confirmation of the takeover is expected to be received shortly from all governing bodies.

"The takeover will see Stewart Donald purchase a controlling stake in the club from the four majority shareholders."

Eastleigh still have an outside shot at making the National League play-offs this season, heading into the final game of the season this weekend.
