Former Sunderland owner Charlie Methven linked with Charlton takeover again

Former Sunderland owner Charlie Methven is reportedly involved in a US-led takeover at Charlton Athletic. The former Black Cats director distanced himself with a takeover at the League One side back in December, but those talks seem to have taken a new direction.

The Athletic claims the recent appointments of new manager in Dean Holden, former-Sunderland CEO Jim Rodwell as chief operating officer, technical director Andy Scott and Ed Warrick as finance director, came as recommendation from the American linked group. Current US owner Thomas Sandgaard, reportedly took the advice of Methven and the US linked group ahead of a possible takeover.

Methven and finance director Warrick are partners in the takeover group called SE7 Partners - SE7 being Charlton’s London postcode. The group includes Simon Lenagan - a close colleague of Methven who acted as an advisor to Simon’s father Ian Lenagan when he owned Oxford United a decade ago.

The main finances behind the takeover are said to come from a group of US investors who have previously owned a Major League Soccer franchise. A return to the Championship remains on the agenda for the League One outfit, but there are problems behind the scenes that need addressing.

The Addicks are tenants at their stadium and training ground, with former owner Roland Duchatelet still owning those property assets. The club are reportedly paying him £500,000 a year in rent, so reclaiming the property is high on the agenda.
