Former Sunderland favourite Fabio Borini could be set for Premier League return in January

Former Sunderland favourite Fabio Borini is reportedly set for a move back to the Premier League in the January transfer window.

Reports in Italy suggest the 28-year-old is keen to leave AC Milan in search of first team football, and Crystal Palace are said to be interested.

Borini made 93 appearances in two separate spells at Sunderland between 2013 and 2017. He netted 17 goals for the Black Cats - the most memorable likely being his winning goal in the Wear-Tyne derby in 2013, as he linked well with Jozy Altidore before firing from long range to make it 2-1.

During that season-long loan spell the Italian became a popular figure on Wearside, but returned to Liverpool at the end of the season in hope of breaking into the Reds' first team. Having failed to do so, he returned to Sunderland in 2015 in a permanent deal, but he failed to produce the same levels consistently over the next two seasons, with the Black Cats eventually relegated from the Premier League.

That prompted Borini's surprise move to Italian giants AC Milan, where he initially made a big impact having been shifted to right wing-back.

But this season under new boss Stefano Pioli the versatile forward has amassed just 70 minutes of football, and Borini's agent - and former Sunderland director of football - Roberto De Fanti is reportedly talking up a January move for his client, with a Premier League return likely.

As well as Sunderland, Borini has also played for Chelsea, Swansea and Liverpool, and was linked with a move to rivals Newcastle United last season.

If he were to make the move to Selhurst Park he would link up with former Sunderland team-mates Patrick van Aanholt and Connor Wickham there.
