Former Sunderland defender Callum Doyle reflects on Stadium of Light spell following Coventry loan

Former Sunderland defender Callum Doyle has called his season-long Wearside loan last term "a great experience".

Loaned to the Black Cats last season from Manchester City, Doyle made 44 appearances for Sunderland, helping them to achieve promotion back to the Championship. The defender impressed at the Stadium of Light, and has been tipped for big things.

Alongside helping Sunderland to League One play-off success, the teenager was also part of the England U19s side who won the U19 European Championship title, with Doyle scoring in the 3-1 final win over Israel. While the 18-year-old only recently returned to his parent club Manchester City, he has since been sent out on loan to Championship side Coventry City.

It means Doyle will face his former club on the opening day of the new Championship season, with Sunderland set to host Coventry at the Stadium of Light on Sunday 31 July.

The 2021/22 season was Doyle's first full season of professional football. The 18-year-old looked comfortable in League One and will be hoping his Sunderland experience stands him in good stead for the upcoming campaign.

And the teenager believes his time at Sunderland was "a great experience" that could play a major part in his development.

"The whole season at Sunderland, I thought, went well," Doyle told Coventry City's official club website. "It was my first season in professional football so to be around the first team and to get as many opportunities as I did was good. All in all, it was a great experience."
