Former Sunderland boss Simon Grayson lands new overseas managerial role

Former Sunderland boss Simon Grayson has been appointed the new head coach of Indian side Bengaluru on a two-year deal. The 52-year-old has previous experience with Leeds United, Huddersfield Town and Sunderland before most recently enjoying a short spell with Fleetwood Town.

The former Black Cats manager has been out of work since his sacking with Fleetwood Town back in November 2021, after taking over following Joey Barton's departure. The former Whites boss only lasted 10 months however with the League One side.

Lasting just four months in the job at the Stadium of Light, Grayson boasts one of the worst managerial records winning just three of his 18 games in charge. Grayson’s arrival in the north east was met with anticipation following relegation from the Premier League, but did boast vast experience of handling a big club having previously been in charge at Leeds United.

Opting to make the switch abroad in his next venture, the ex-Terriers boss is not the first Englishman to take charge of Bengaluru, with former Crewe defender Ashley Westwood enjoying a three-year spell with the club between 2013 and 2016.

He told the official club website : “Coming to India was a possibility that I had looked into two years ago. But the pandemic put all things on hold. When the chance came across again, I was excited to look into it. This presents a new opportunity in my football career and it is one that really excites me.”

With the clubs domestic season set to get underway in October, the four time promotion winner will hope to return the side to its former glory having not finished in the top three since the 2019/20 campaign.
