Former Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy opens up on altercation with Newcastle fans at the airport

Former Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy has opened up on an altercation he had with Newcastle fans at Newcastle Airport during his time as Black Cats Boss.

The Sunderland team were on there way back from a training camp during the international break when two Magpies fans confronted the team at Newcastle Airport on arrival.

Speaking to What The Falk Podcast, McCarthy said: "We were walking back to the car park and I was just getting abuse. So I dropped my bag and turned round.

"I said 'I beg your pardon' and they were coming towards me and I was going towards them.

"The next thing I know Micky Holland who was stood beside me said 'What's happening gaffer?'

"I said I think there's going to be trouble Mick, so he said 'Well if there's going to be trouble then there's two of us.'

"Then suddenly it wasn't just me the Sunderland manager vs these two Newcastle fans it was me and Micky Holland.

"They did an about turn and left. Micky Holland was great, he was one of those people at football clubs that keep people going.

"He was just one of those characters and I loved him - even more so when he was stood next to me when it was going to kick off."
