Former Sunderland assistant Steve Cotterill leaves hospital after Covid battle

Former Sunderland assistant manager Steve Cotterill has left hospital after a 33 day battle with coronavirus.

The Shrewsbury Town manager tested positive for Covid-19 on January 1 and spent time in intensive care.

Cotterill went through a ten day isolation period in Shrewsbury before going home to Bristol where he became very ill.

The 56-year-old, who was assistant manager at Sunderland under Howard Wilkinson, was admitted to Bristol Royal Infirmary Hospital where he has spent the last month.

The Salop manager is set to go through a rehabilitation period and will continue to work with his staff remotely.

A club statement said: "Steve would like to thank Dr Katrina Curtis for her excellent medical diagnosis and the nurses on A800 ward that took care of him during his stay.

"Finally, Steve would also like to thank everybody for the overwhelming messages of love and support that have come from inside and outside of football - he will endeavour to get back to those people now he is feeling well enough."
