Former Sun reporter cleared after spending 19 months on police bail

After spending 19 months on police bail, The Sun's former west country correspondent, John Coles, has finally been told he will not face any charges.

He was arrested in September 2012 as part of the Operation Elveden investigation into allegations of inappropriate payments to public officials.

He was detained on suspicion of conspiracy to corrupt and conspiracy to cause misconduct in a public office.

Coles, 54, is now an associate news editor at the Bristol-based news agency, South West News Service.

According to a Press Gazette report, he responded to the news by saying he was "always confident of a positive outcome." He added:

"My thoughts and sympathies remain with my former colleagues who are not so fortunate and who have yet to clear their names."

The announcement by the Metropolitan police that no further action will be taken against Coles follows similar decisions in relation to several colleagues, including Mike Sullivan, Rhodri Phillips and Chris Pollard.

But 14 Sun journalists who have been charged with criminal offences are due to face trial this summer.
