Former student kills his ex-girlfriend and male friend in college murder-suicide

A former student of a New York state university killed his ex-girlfriend and her male friend before phoning his father to let him know he was going to kill himself.

Colin Kingston, a 24-year-old former student at SUNY Geneseo, went to his 21-year-old ex-girlfriend and student Kelsey Annese’s house on Sunday morning. He stabbed her and her friend 24-year-old Matthew Hutchinson to death.

Police received an emergency call about 6.30am from Mr Kingston’s father, Daniel Kingston, to say Ms Annese and Mr Hutchinson had been killed and his son was about to kill himself.

“All three individuals succumbed to injuries from stab wounds,” said Jeffrey Szczesniak, the public information officer for the Geneseo police department.

It is unknown whether Mr Hutchinson and Ms Annese were in a relationship. Mr Szcznesniak said it appeared the three bodies were found together at an off-campus street, according to am New York.

Ms Annese, from Webster, New York, was taking a degree in education, Spanish and psychology and played on the women’s basketball team.

Mr Hutchinson was from North Vancouver. He was studying geography and business studies and was a member of the hockey team. He also volunteered for the Geneseo fire department - his ambition was to become a full-time firefighter, according to a note attributed to Mr Hutchinson on Twitter.

The Geneseo President Denise A. Battles said at a press conference on Monday: “It’s a profoundly sad day for all of us at SUNY Geneseo as we begin to mourn these heartbreaking deaths.”

The remembrance ceremony takes place at 7pm on Wednesday. Classes at the University resumed on Tuesday as President Battles said the students would benefit from stability during a time of mourning.
