Former Steelers CB says lack of backup quarterback a concern for Pittsburgh

Every season NFL rosters change — some more than others. But rarely do you see a team simply stand pat year to year. The Pittsburgh Steelers had a major overhaul of their roster this offseason, starting with replacing wide receiver Antonio Brown. But according to former Steelers cornerback Brandon Boykin, replacing Brown is only half the problem.

Boykin was on “NFL Total Access” and he noted the Steelers’ lack of experience at backup quarterback as the “other” big reason the Steelers won’t be as good this season. You can hear Boykin’s full rationale in the video below.

I readily acknowledge the sledding is going to be tough early on without Brown. Offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner has his work cut out for him in training camp and the preseason figuring out how to spotlight JuJu Smith-Schuster without overloading him.

But the notion the backup quarterback is as important as a starting wide receiver doesn’t make much sense. Joshua Dobbs enters his third season, and we really saw great growth from him last preseason. And Mason Rudolph was highly rated coming out of college last season. There isn’t a team in the NFL that could absorb an extended absence of their starting quarterback, so making it seem like this would be more detrimental for Pittsburgh than any other team doesn’t make much sense.
