Former St Pius X teacher Edward 'Ted' Hall to stand trial

Former St Pius X high school teacher Edward "Ted" Hall has been committed to stand trial on indecent assault charges against a male student.

The 69-year-old former maths teacher pleaded not guilty to the two charges when he briefly appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday.

Magistrate Robert Stone committed Hall to stand trial in Newcastle District Court on February 13.

Hall was charged about 12 months ago after a former student reported the assault allegation to police.

Hall taught at the former male-only school between 1972 and June 1986.

He later taught at Sydney private boys' schools including Newington College and Trinity Grammar.

In a Newington College report after Mr Hall's retirement in 2000, he was described as an teacher and rugby referees coordinator.

While at Newington College he led school waterpolo team tours, including to South Africa.

Hall later taught at Gundagai High in 2014 and was a casual teacher at Illabo Public School until March 2016
