Former St Mirren trio help Scotland end major tournament drought after Euro 2020 play-off final win

Three ex-Buddies helped steer their country past Serbia in a dramatic play-off final penalty shoot-out to qualify for Euro 2020.

Manager Steve Clarke, who played for St Mirren between 1982 and 1987 before moving to Chelsea, has gone down in Scottish football history as the coach who finally ended Scotland 's 22-year wait to qualify for a major tournament.

Two Saints youth academy graduates, John McGinn and Kenny McLean, were also heavily involved as the Scots battled to an incredible and long-awaited result.

Celtic winger Ryan Christie had put the Scots on course to make history with a sublime finish in the second half, before Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic headed his side level at the death.

After a nerve-wracking extra-time it fell to penalties and McLean, who netted the crucial winning spot-kick against Israel in the Nations League play-off semi-final, held his nerve brilliantly once again to score Scotland's vital fifth kick.

That heaped all the pressure onto Fulham hitman Aleksandar Mitrovic, and David Marshall pulled off a superb save that sparked wild celebrations in living rooms across the country as the long wait for a return to a major finals finally came to an end.

Speaking after the match to Sky Sports, Clarke said: "Normally we fall at the final hurdle or we have the glorious failure.

"The reaction, I thought we were the better team in the game, we just couldn't get the second goal to kill them off and obviously conceding late on from a set play.

"It was a big setback but you have to be so proud of the player the way they responded. That was sore one, we were really close with where we wanted to be.

"We got it to penalties and managed to produce from the penalty spot. It's a magnificent night, we said we would try and put a smile back on the fans faces and I hope they enjoyed the moment as much as we did here."
