Former St Mirren captain Stephen McGinn breaks silence on departing boyhood club

Former St Mirren captain Stephen McGinn has broken his silence on leaving his boyhood club.

Stephen became the third McGinn to make the switch from Paisley to Edinburgh when he joined Hibs after impressing Jack Ross, following in the footsteps of younger brothers John and Paul.

The 31-year-old made no secret of the fact he’d have liked to have had the chance to earn a new deal in Paisley before he was released over the summer.

He told the Go Radio Football Show : “I loved my time as captain at St Mirren and Jack Ross made me skipper during my first week in.

“The first season back in the Premiership I played through a few injuries so I ended up getting them squared up.

“By the time I got back into training it was then into full lockdown.

“Obviously I had half an idea the manager wanted to change about the squad but I’d have liked to have had the opportunity to try and earn a new deal.

“It wasn’t to be but it’s opened up a new door that I’m really excited about.”
