Former Spurs star Rafael van der Vaart has compared Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire to a Sunday League player.
The defender featured in a new-look three-man defence in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday that saw Jurgen Klopp's side grab a late equaliser.
Despite making a decent start to his Old Trafford career and being a continued presence in the England squad, Van der Vaart says Maguire was not worth the record-breaking fee United paid for him, and said players of his level could be found in the amateur leagues.
"When I watch an amateur game on Sunday, I find three players playing like him. I'm serious," Van der Vaart said on Ziggo Sport.
"It may sound silly, but he will not hear it anyway. After all, we're talking about a €90million transfer here. Then [Virgil] van Dijk is worth €300million."
It is not the first time Van der Vaart has been critical of the centre-back. He described the former Leicester City star as "the worst player on the pitch" when Holland beat England 3-1 in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals in June.
"It's funny because during the Nations League, I was doing work for Dutch television," he told Sky Sports.
"And I remember we were saying 'Harry Maguire was by far the worst player on the pitch'.
"And then two months later, £80m-£90m? Unbelievable."
