Former Spurs man has warning for Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard after missing out on England squad

Former Tottenham star Chris Waddle has issued a warning to Dele Alli after his difficult start to the season.

Alli has dealt with injuries aplenty during the last two seasons and that has led to him becoming an outcast for club and country.

The attacking midfielder has gone off the boil after beginning his career at Spurs in lightning fashion.

The 23-year-old scored ten goals and assisted nine during the 2015/16 season in what was his full debut campaign for Tottenham, before he followed that up with 18 goals and seven assists (2016/17) and nine goals and ten assists (2017/18) over the next two seasons.

But Alli only played 25 league games last season, scoring just five goals and assisting three. This time around he's yet to start a league match for Mauricio Pochettino's men due to injuries and a lack of form.

Southgate on why Dele Alli and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are missing from the England squad

England boss Gareth Southgate has since left Alli out of his latest squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers with Czech Republic and Bulgaria because he has just returned from injury.

Though that decision was widely expected, Waddle had some choice words for the midfielder and the likes of Jesse Lingard, who is also not in the England squad.

"The players who have been dropped need to think about having a Plan B. When young players come on to the scene, they get all the headlines and are talked about as though they have been doing it for 400 games. They can have unbelievable seasons but then go off the boil. Players can get lazy and believe the hype," Waddle told the Racing Post.

"Dele Alli has wonderful ability but I just think he has been worked out by opposing coaches. The same goes for Jesse Lingard. It's time for him to look at his game and work at it on the training ground - it can take as little as 20 minutes per day - and develop a new approach."
