Former Spurs defender on why Liverpool are the perfect opponents in the Champions League final

Tottenham have an opportunity to "rewrite history" when they face Liverpool in the Champions League final - and former Spurs defender Dean Austin is optimistic about his old side's chances of doing so.

Spurs will face Jurgen Klopp's Reds at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday, June 1, having come back from three goals down in the semi-final against Ajax to book their place in Madrid.

And although Liverpool produced a similarly remarkable comeback against Barcelona to win 4-3 on aggregate against the Catalan giants, Austin says he feels more confident with Spurs playing the Reds as he reflected on the club's incredible run to the final.

“It has been astounding. I have been to the home games, most of them, and when they played PSV and Inter away and were in complete control, and ended up losing both games, that was quite astounding.

“I saw the Barcelona game and saw what [Lionel] Messi did, but the comeback they have made has been quite incredible really.

“Obviously before what Liverpool did to Barcelona, I have not seen anyone do what Tottenham did to Barcelona in the Nou Camp. Obviously Liverpool then produced their miracle, but Spurs have done unbelievable and now they have got to this position, they have an opportunity to rewrite history.

So does Austin think they will win the final in Madrid?

“I am more confident them playing Liverpool than I would have been them playing Barcelona," he said.

“It will be more like a Premier League game, and Spurs played brilliantly away to Liverpool a couple of months ago. They lost 2-1, but they probably should have won the game.

“So I am optimistic.”
