Former SPL chief delivers Celtic title verdict as he urges league bosses to get a move on

Former SPL chief Roger Mitchell insists there will be no miracle for Scottish football as he called for an end to the current season.

SPFL bosses have yet to decide whether season 2019/20 will be called early as football remains in shutdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Mitchell believes pain is inescapable but that the powers-that-be must decide whether to take the hit this season or next.

And he maintains the best option is to declare Celtic champions and explore the prospect of an expanded Premiership.

The Hoops are currently 13 points clear of Rangers at the summit, with Hearts six adrift of safety.

And Mitchell told PLZ Soccer : “I don’t think you can continue to drag this on and hope that some miracle happens and it all falls into place.

“You have to take the pain in one season and you have to decide which season it’s going to be.

“I think you need to take the pain in 2019/2020 and I think you need to call this league.

“If you are thinking about the welfare of your member clubs then that [relegation] is a big decision.

“We’re talking about Hearts and that’s a dramatic change in their business reality.

“I would certainly investigate the idea of not having relegation, bringing up the others and having a temporary expanded league.”
