Former Speaker John Bercow rules out I'm A Celebrity because it would 'ruin' him

Former Speaker John Bercow vowed never to star on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here.

Rumours were swirling the politician was going to sign up to the series set in Oz in 2019.

But the MP, 57, quickly shut down those whispers as he said he closed down the opportunity.

The public figure turned his nose up at the idea because he insisted it was "trashy" and the nature of the show would "ruin" his reputation.

He told Chris Evans: "[I didn't agree to do it] Because I think it's a trashy program. I think it would trash my brand."

Politicians - including Ann Widdecombe, Edwina Currie, and Lembit Opik - have starred on the jungle show located in Oz over the years.

Despite rubbishing the show, Bercow acknowledged "good people" appeared on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here and "goodluck to them".

As well as branding it a trashy show, he offered up the excuse he didn't fancy having to do the notoriously grisly BushTucker Trials.

He added: "And the idea of going in the jungle and taking some risks or experiencing extreme discomfort or horrible taste from having to eat something really disgusting is not for me.

"It's not only undignified, I think it's really unpleasant. And if you have to be honest about yourself and with yourself, it's not me."

Bercow was a Speaker of the House of Commons for a decade from 2009 to 2019.

Following the end of his time in the House of Commons, he was approached by a talent agent for the programme.

But Bercow resisted the chance to star in a reality show.

He added: "No, I didn't want it. There was a talent agent, Chris, who phoned me up and said she understood that I was considering going on the programme.

"And I said: 'Well, I'm sorry, but you're quite wrong about that. I'm not considering it. And I wouldn't do so under any circumstances at any time.'"
